Happy 2020, everyone.

I went back into my archived posts from 2009 (because I literally backed up everything from my old LJs to this site) to find that I didn't really weigh in on the end of the 2000s. At the end of 2009, I was unemployed - part of the fallout from the economic crisis left over from the end of the Bush administration. It was a rough time, but I got through it. I got another job, and another one after that one, and again after that one. I picked myself up and kept going.

The 2000s were a time of amazing pop culture, and horrible global and social issues that left scars on people all over the planet; wounds that still bleed to this day. As I am writing this, hostilities in the Middle East are ramping back up again, due to the attack on the US Embassy in Iraq and the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani at the Baghdad International Airport - a result of 17 years of illegal US occupation, and Donald Trump's more recent incompetence and malfeasance. The brother of a friend of mine was just re-deployed. And so it goes.

The 2010s in pop culture were dominated by the Disney/MCU tentpole, for better or worse. In every other respect, the 2010s feel like a decade of stagnation and obstruction on a personal, national, and global level. It should have been the decade we broke free and progressed forward from the constraints and problems of the previous decade - but we either didn't, or we were actively prevented from doing so by the malicious, the resentful, the hateful, the reactionary, the bigoted, the accelerationists, among us. It feels like the lessons we should have taken with us from the 2000s were ultimately forgotten. The 2010s feel like a wasted decade.

It's terrible and sad to think about, but I think that the 2010s were years where the malcontents - those who feel like they can't succeed if they don't get to revel in others' failure; those who want to watch society burn, not because there are aspects of it which deserve to burn, but out of bigotry and spite because there is no room for their supremacy in society which is truly progressive and egalitarian; those who made a habit of attacking the most vulnerable among us; those who value profit over human life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; those who embraced nationalism and dominion over community and collectivism, and who exalted cruelty over compassion - zerg-rushed us. And for whatever reason, we allowed them to bully the rest of us. We permitted their voices to overwhelm ours.

This is the thing to remember - we outnumber them. They rose to power only on our sufferance.

The 2020s need to be the decade where we rise up and beat them decisively, once and for all.
