The latest on the DIY front.
So I've been wanting a little desk for my bedroom, but I didn't want to shell out a lot of money. As it so happens, my friend and former roommate
flamingsword was getting rid of this little desk that I'd given them after I upgraded. I had thought they'd gotten rid of it years ago, and I was glad to take it off their hands as it had some sentimental value (and I still miss my old desk from before that, an old audio engineer's desk from back in the day.) My most recent upgrade, an Ikea Linnmon/Adils combo, ended up becoming a makeshift kitchen island. So I was overjoyed to get my old desk back.
But when I got it home I saw that the contact paper covering the particle board desktop was peeling, and that underneath it was mold. So I unscrewed the desktop and threw it out. I don't have any recent pics of the desk as it was with the old desktop, but I might have some going way, way back that I'll look for.
Anyway, I ended up getting this "project panel" from the hardware store to serve as a new desktop. I sanded it down and sealed it with two coats of satin polyurethane.

There was one problem: the screws that had been used to attach the old particle board desktop to the frame were machine/sheet metal type screws. I was worried that even if I made a pilot hole the right size, they'd pop right out. The local hardware stores and department stores don't carry the right type of wood screws, and I didn't want to order a pack of a bazillion of them off Amazon when I only needed four. So I had to improvise.
That's right, I stuck it together with command strips (the velcro variant.)

Command strips are kind of the renter's go-to solution. Apartment Therapy loves them some command strips. So I figured it might work here.
It's pretty sturdy. It's only got a laptop and some decorative lamps on it right now, anyway.

Yay, desk! It kind of looks like the Ikea Kullaberg.
