First they came for:
So we've gotten to the point where ICE is disappearing people. And this was an eventuality that people were talking about back during Trump's first term.
The good news is that people are demanding answers and pushing back. We're still very much in the "Trump/Musk are trying to find out exactly what we'll let them get away with" stage. And the good news is, lines are being drawn in the sand, and people are waking up and standing up.
The whole story of the Martin Niemöller poem is, he was not a principled objector to the Nazis from the outset. He was a Nazi sympathizer who eventually came to believe that Hitler was going too far. The famous poem is often employed as a cautionary tale against apathy, but the truth is that he initially approved of what the Nazis were doing until they "crossed a line."
I'm seeing a lot of, "Mahmoud Khalil is a Hamas sympathizer and of course that is reprehensible, BUT the Government can't just go disappearing people for saying things we don't like - not even Donald Trump's Government. It's against The Constitution." And I'm also seeing people question the accusation that he is even a Hamas sympathizer, or if this is just a smear tactic.
But I'm seeing more people than I expected (even on Bluesky) saying that ICE had the right to arrest him and take away his green card for "supporting Hamas," or even "people like him deserve it for helping to elect Trump. Haha FAFO!" And they say that now - but what happens when Trump comes for people they do care about. Or for them, personally?
Because Trump will get around to coming for them, eventually. History has seen this play out before, countless times.
That is, unless he and Musk both implode their own regime first! But we can't count on that, not even the way things have been going this week. We have to stand up to them, here and now.
Ultimately, it doesn't matter what he said or who he protested, or what he was protesting for. This is America, and this kind of crap should not be happening here. People should not be "disappeared" here without Habeus Corpus or Due Process. There should be a hard limit against this kind of thing. I know this may sound naive, considering what we know about the FBI, CIA, NSA, ICE (both just in general, and during Trump's first term) etc, as well as all of the illegal, shady crap that was going on during the war in Iraq. But we should not be letting this shit happen here. It needs to stop.
