I took this Contemporary Latin America course in second year uni, mainly because it fit my schedule and I had a vague interest in the course and professor, and it turned out to be one of the courses that most influenced my worldview. One of the things he pointed out was it's not objective suffering that makes people revolt. It's relative suffering. It's when your own level of comfort drops, and especially when it drops relative to the people around you.
I'm thinking about that a lot now, and when I look at analysis of why people voted Trump. Or why people feel unsafe in my city, which has a low crime rate that is trending downwards.
