Because you can go either way and make it interesting, even including having Pinhead have to choose to not go down the path laid before him and the costs that might entail. If he loves Kirsty, he might have to reject her to save her. You could go 31 flavors of angst and manpain, which can be fun to write, when you have a characterization in your head that won't go away.
