It's time for them to go. Most of them were not even erected right after the Civil War - they were cheaply mass-produced and erected during the Jim Crow and Civil Rights eras, as a "gimmie" to white supremacists who were afraid they were losing their stranglehold on privilege in this country.

It's past time for them to be taken down. Sure, I'm all for warehousing Confederate statues in a museum somewhere, in their proper context - as ill-conceived consolation prizes for the side who were fighting to oppress other human beings. And that will clear up enough space for there to be monuments to the Cajun Navy and other Hurricane Harvey first responders instead, at least here in Texas.
